I am always direct about this passport: it is a mid-strength document. Its value is price, speed and the Portuguese-speaking world, not Europe. Data below are from the BRIDGES passport index of 4 October 2026 and the CIU site, checked on 25 October 2026.

Where you can go without a visa

DestinationEntry
Singaporevisa-free, 30 days
Hong Kongvisa-free, 14 days

Malaysiavisa-free, 30 days
Angolavisa-free, 30 days
Egypt, Mozambique, Maldivesvisa on arrival
Schengen area, UK, US, Canadavisa required
Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Koreavisa required

The BRIDGES index counts 58 destinations without a prior visa and ranks the passport 79th of 199. The CIU says “over 93 countries”. Other BRIDGES articles give about 70, or 70 to 98 with e-visas included. These numbers count different things and change often, so check the specific country before a trip.

Validity, dual citizenship and children

Dual citizenship is allowed and you keep your current passport. According to BRIDGES, the passport is issued for 7 years rather than the 10 common elsewhere, so you will renew it more often. Citizenship does not expire and passes to children by descent. The decree also exempts citizens by investment permanently from military service.

The CPLP route to Portugal

São Tomé is a member of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries together with Portugal and Brazil. BRIDGES describes two consequences.

Residence

Under the CPLP Mobility Agreement (Luanda, 17 July 2021, approved in Portugal by Assembly Resolution 313/2021) a CPLP citizen can apply for a CPLP consular visa at a Portuguese consulate and then a residence card, with a state fee of €15.

Naturalisation

Under Lei Orgânica 1/2026, published in Portugal’s Diário da República on 18 May 2026, CPLP citizens can naturalise after 7 years of lawful residence against 10 for others. The period counts from the issue of the first residence card, and the law added an exam on Portuguese history and culture. BRIDGES mentions A2 Portuguese as the language level.

What it does not give

There is no discount on the Portuguese Golden Visa. Investment residence terms are the same for all non-EU citizens. I have taken these Portuguese rules from BRIDGES and have not checked the Portuguese texts myself, so confirm them with a Portuguese lawyer before you plan around them.

For Russian citizens

According to BRIDGES, Russian law requires dual citizens to notify the Ministry of Internal Affairs within about 60 days of acquiring another citizenship. Citizenship is also not the same as tax residence. I have not checked the Russian rule against the law text, so treat it as BRIDGES information.

Questions and answers

How many countries can I visit without a visa?

The BRIDGES passport index of 4 October 2026 counts 58 destinations without a prior visa. The official programme site says over 93 countries. The difference is in how visas on arrival and e-visas are counted.

Does the passport give visa-free travel to Europe?

No. Schengen and the UK require a visa, as do the US, Canada, Australia and Japan.

Does it give a fast route to a Portuguese passport?

Not fast. Under Portugal's Lei Orgânica 1/2026, CPLP citizens can naturalise after 7 years of legal residence instead of 10. You still have to live in Portugal and meet the other conditions.

How long is the passport valid?

According to BRIDGES, 7 years. Citizenship itself does not expire and passes to children.
